The Army Rice – Soldiers Disgruntled
Rice supplies, as was ordered by President Koroma, has caused soldiers to go discontented not having a seed for almost three months now.
Soldiers at Wilberforce Barracks had called government’s refusal to supplying them ‘take home rations’ for the past three months as ‘wicked bad old tricks’ of politicians.
President Koroma, in his bid to satisfy persons acting as security officers in the military, ordered the revival of a monthly supply of rice to soldiers.
The announcement also witnessed jubilations, at almost, all the military barracks countrywide.
Soldiers, in June 2010, received the first supply of rice as was declared by the President.
Up until July, all from top to bottom receives a bag of rice each.
Since then, August- October, soldiers have had no rice supplied to them.
According to soldiers at Wilberforce Barracks, it is exposed that the halt in the supply of rice for three consecutive months has left families of soldiers in a state of food shortage and starvation.
It could be recalled that President Koroma’s brother, Junior Koroma aka ‘What A Man,’ forwarded complaints to the national procurement office shortly after the Army rice contract was awarded to African Sunshine.
The complaint, our findings revealed, brought to light objections over the conduct of officials of Defense Ministry in the award of such a contract.
The African Sunshine, which for two months, supplied rice to officers of the military, was stripped off such a contract in August.
Sources say it was due to undue influences exerted by President Koroma’s younger brother that officials of procurement office resulted into stripping the African Sunshine from off the contract to supply rice to the Army.
Soldiers who spoke on grounds of anonymity revealed how political interferences have been the cause to the uncalled for halt in the supply of rice for three consecutive months.
According to the soldiers, President Koroma’s brother has caused them the perils they now go through.
Inside Defense Ministry source has disclosed that the contract to supply rice to the Army will soon be awarded to President Koroma’s brother Junior Koroma.
