Armed robbers put Lunsar under siege
Residents of Lunsar Town have become the latest victims of marauding armed robbers who have targeted the town and caused social and other night life to come to a standstill, Sierra Express Media Northern correspondent reports.
The robbers, said to be armed with automatic rifles and pistols, have forced their way into several homes and business houses where they have carted away valuables including cash and household appliances.
Police officers in Lunsar claim they are constrained as a result of the lack of vehicles and men and that they have to depend on reinforcement from Makeni whenever they have reports about the activities of armed robbers. But residents have blamed the police for not acting swiftly and that there is a low morale among the police.
The latest victim has been popular businessman Santigie Sesay, whose house was attacked by robbers firing indiscriminately, causing panic and threatening to kill anyone who attempted to challenge them.
Explaining his ordeal, Mr. Sesay narrated how a group of robber attacked him at his residence at Kenema Road in Lunsar at about midnight last week Tuesday. “I was in my house when I heard continuous firing and later a group of men forced their way into my house, because of the manner in which they were armed and shooting, I concealed myself,” he said.
According to Mr. Santigie Sesay, the robbers broke into his shop where they took away the sum of 90 million Leones and the sum of US $2,200.
Following the attack on Mr. Santigie Sesay, Lunsar youths claiming they have no trust in the police have mounted check points in Lunsar Town and have vowed to search and locate those that are involved in the current state of robbery in the town. “We will ensure that we are in control from now on as the police have proved that they have no way of keeping the robbers under control,” said Saidu Thulla, a resident of the town.
Mr. Santigie Sesay also stated that in their rush to take his money, the robbers also took away many documents pertaining to his business and other personal papers and records.
Police in Lunsar are mainly investigating the matter and have called on the youths and other residents to exercise restraint.
