NRA Hosts Regional Workshop on Stakeholder Relationship Management

The National Revenue Authority (NRA)  in collaboration with the World Customs Organization (WCO)  held a five-day regional workshop for English Speaking West African member states of the WCO on the topic “Management of Stakeholder Relationship”. The workshop which started on November 5th and ended on the 9th is part of the West Africa Customs Administrations Modernization Project initiated by WCO to support Customs Administrations and contribute to their on-going modernization efforts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Project Manager of the West African Customs Administrations Modernization Project said the project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).  Mr. Richard Chopra said the project is a direct response to the priority needs identified by heads of Customs in 2008 during a Conference of Director Generals of West and Central Africa. During that conference, he said three priority needs in form of strategic management were identified which are Human Resource Management, Stakeholder Relations and Resource Mobilization.

Mr. Chopra said the project started in February 2012 will end in 2014 and aims to contribute to the overall modernization efforts of Customs Administrations that are members of the WCO. He added that the first part of the project will end in February 2013 and will take the form of regional workshops in English and French to raise awareness and share beat practices. Mr. Chopra stated that Sierra Leone was selected to host the workshop on stakeholder relationship management because the institution has demonstrated strong commitment to modernize its systems and operations. Further, the administration of NRA has express interest in being more involved in regional events organized by WCO.

He said the first set of regional workshop was held in Nigeria and Burkina Faso while this workshop in stakeholder relations will be held in Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast in November. The last workshop on Resource Mobilization will be held in 2013 in Senegal and Gambia. After the regional workshops, WCO will offer support and assistant to member states based on request from countries participating regional workshop.

The Director of Corporate Service NRA who deputized the Acting Commissioner-General Mr. Bilal Kargbo said since the inception of the Modernization Programme in 2008, the NRA has made enormous strides to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations. He said the main thrust of the modernization programme involves improving upon the Authority’s business processes and procedures for better service delivery. This he added has helped the Authority will continue to engage stakeholders.
