Health Ministry to charge 7 to court

The Sierra Leone Pharmacy Board and the Sierra Leone Police will this week charge 7 people to court, caught in a ferocious raid on drug peddling in the capital of Freetown; a raid that has been orchestrated by the Ministry of Health through the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police to serve as deterrent to the evil in fake and counterfeit drug peddling that has taken over affairs on Street corners and in suburbs in the capital, according to Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation Mohamed D. Koroma.

Sorie Samura, Mohamed Conteh, Isatu Conteh, Rugiatu Bah, Alice Kargbo, Esther Bangura and Hawa Mansaray will appear in court in Freetown for crimes committed in the illegal sale of drugs with the police and Pharmacy Board settling precedence for all those that are engaged in such devious merchandise in the country.

The raid which started on June 2, 2010 saw a police led raid on the PZ round-about where drug peddlers have their den at the central business district in Freetown, and saw the peddlers running in all directions leaving behind their medicines and wares that were confiscated and which will be used as evidence against the suspects in the ensuing prosecution.

Confirmed news from the Deputy Registrar at the Pharmacy Board Mr. James P. Komeh reveals that the worth of confiscated medicine measures in Le10million at retail cost and that more of such raids will follow all over the city and will be extended to other parts of the country in the coming weeks and months to ensure that counterfeit medicines and the very idea of drug peddling is done away with in the country. Komeh noted that the informal market that is drug smuggling and peddling account for over 98% of counterfeit and fake drugs sold in the country and that 99% of all drugs sold in licensed and registered pharmaceutical outlets are good and potent.

Talking to Sierra Express Media, Minister of Health and Sanitation Mohamed D. Koroma registered the resolve of his Ministry in collaboration with the Sierra Leone police to rid the country of the evil of counterfeit medical and pharmaceutical products as according to him, there will be no turning back in what the Pharmacy Board has started as the Ministry is ever ready to complement the president’s agenda for change in the country health care service delivery.
