UKaid Provides Shelter for Fire Victims in Sierra Leone

A total of £175,000 of aid has been provided through the Start Fund, a multi-donor fund which offers rapid humanitarian support in emergency situations. Concern Worldwide has used this funding to distribute shelter kits for 160 affected households in both the Kroo Bay and Susan’s Bay areas of Freetown, addressing immediate humanitarian needs and providing relief for an estimated 1,200 people. Shelter was identified as the most pressing concern following consultation with the affected communities, and the Office of National Security (ONS).

Concern Worldwide has worked in close partnership with the organisation of the Federated Urban Poor, a local community organisation, the ONS and the Freetown City Council. The shelter kit design is based on list of items agreed with the ONS, and Concern has also added tarpaulins which are essential for safety and protection against weather conditions.
The Start Fund is managed by a consortium of non-governmental organisations and can activate within 3 days to ensure humanitarian relief is available quickly for those in need during small to medium emergencies. The UK Department for International Development (DFID) is the largest donor to the Start Fund, which is also supported by the Irish, Dutch, German, Belgian and Jersey governments, and the European Commission. It is a key part of DFID’s humanitarian response toolkit.
