SLRCS/ICRC Engage Legislators on International Humanitarian Law

Officials of the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) and International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), on Wednesday May 12th, 2010, held a one day meeting with legislators on information session on International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

Before declaring, the session open, Speaker of Parliament, Hon Justice Abel Stronge told Law makers and those present that the term ‘ Humanitarian’ is often used in everyday language in a very broad sense, noting that it can easily be confused with the term ‘Humanitarian’.

He went on to state that even though both terminologies are concerned with the protection of the individual, human rights applied to the protection of the individual in terms of both war and peace, while humanitarian law applies to situations of armed conflict. Justice Stronge further noted  that not until the 19th century when a set of Internationally recognized laws in the  conduct and treatment of persons in warfare were created, stressing that the ICRC has since the mid 1850’ helped to champion the first universally applicable codification of  International Humanitarian Law.

He said International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is one of the World’s largest humanitarian networks, adding that the movement is neutral and impartial, and provides protection and assistance to people affected by disasters and conflicts.

According to Justice Stronge, SLRCS which was established in 1962 by an Act of parliament supports communities in becoming stronger and safer through variety of development projects and humanitarian activities, furthering that the movement works in cooperation’s to assist vulnerable people around the world.   “This organization has provided children up to the age of with numeracy and literary lessons with the aim of reintegrating the younger folks into additional skills to help- become self sufficient.
