Sierra Leone marks World Red Cross Day

As part of its 150 years celebrations today, 8th  May 2013, Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) joins other Red Cross Red Crescent Societies all over the world to mark 150 years of the International Red Cross Movement and the First Geneva convention.

According the Secretary General of SLCRS, Mr. Emmanuel Tommy, said this years celebration will be held in Kenema in the eastern region of Sierra Leone.

Addressing a press conference yesterday at the Board Room of the national secretariat of the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society Liverpool Street in Freetown, Mr. Tommy said the tradition of celebration of  World Red Cross Day on 8th May is to observe by paying tribute to the volunteers for their unprecedented contribution to people in need.

He commended the volunteers for their selfless efforts since the inception of Red Cross, adding that voluntary action has been its quintessence, volunteering serves as a means of helping people in need particularly those involved in disaster prone areas.

The Secretary General briefed media practitioners about the activities  SLRCS has undertaken over the years including blood donation , distribution of over one million mosquito bed nets.

He said during the outbreak of cholera last year in Sierra Leone, SLRCS was on the forefront to sensitize the people on the prevention of cholera and providing medication to the victims.

Mr. Tommy explained that they also assist the youths for them to be self reliant by engaging them in training skills such as carpentry, and hairdressing, to name but a few.  He said after the training SLRCS provides them with a package to start their own enterprise in order for them to be self reliant.

He appealed to the press to partner with his organization to move the Red Cross Society forward.

The president of the SLRCS, Mr. Edward T.Gandi, also make statement on the international recognition  ICRC has made all over the world and such recognition is a feather in their cap not only in  Sierra Leone but all over the world.
