Youths Vow to Dethrone Paramount Chief

Enraged youths in Machaning, Koya Chiefdom, Port Loko District, have vowed to dethrone their somewhat unpopular Paramount Chief for not acting in the interest of the youths and the ordinary people according to reports coming from our northern Correspondent. The youths according to confirmed police reports mounted road blocks to prevent the Paramount Chief, Alhaji Kandeh Kompa II of Koya Chiefdom from performing ceremonial functions at Rokupr Village in the Port Loko District.

Youths interviewed said, they have decided to bar the paramount chief from observing this year’s traditional rites because he had been petitioned by the chiefdom elders and until now, government has not looked into the issues surrounding the petition whilst he continues to work not in the interest of the people to those of himself and kinsmen.

Molai Kamara, Chiefdom elder charged the Paramount Chief of misappropriating chiefdom funds, receiving money from sub chiefs so as gain appointment in various sections and towns in the Chiefdom. Claims are that most of these people are in fact not coming from ruling houses.

It has been disclosed that a letter of petition has been written to the provincial secretary, North, Mr. Abdul Rahman Dumbuya, and copies sent to the resident Minister North, Hon. Alie Kamara, and the Minister of local Government, Internal Affairs and Rural Development.

According to the elders, it has been three years since they petitioned the chief but since then nothing has been done about the petition which has now force the youths to barricade the road to prevent the paramount chief from attending this year’s traditional rites.

However, according to section chief, Pa Alimamy Sankoh, their lives has being terrorized by these youths, who, he said, are supported by the Member of Parliament of that constituency, Hon. Abu Bakarr Koroma

Chief Sankoh further alleged that he was beaten by sixteen of these youths who were bragging that the Member of Parliament has ordered them to behead six people in the chiefdom including the paramount chief, section chief, Pa Bombolie, King Fullah, Chief Kombrabai Kargbo and Chief Alimamy Sankoh.

However, when contacted on his cell phones Hon. Abu Bakarr Koroma described the allegations as blatant lies meant to tarnish his image. He said as the representative for constituency 58, he has regard for his people and has no reason to harm anybody. He called on his constituents to be law abiding and wait for the outcome of there petition, which, he said is now being look into.

Meanwhile section chief Alimamy Sankoh has reported his beating to the Masaika police Station and the issue is currently under investigation.
