Koya Youths Strike against Samba Chinese Stone Mining Company

Youths at Maknadeh village, Koya Chiefdom, Foredugu Section in Port Loko District, are reported to have staged strike action against Samba Chinese Stone Mining Company for failing to fulfill workers condition of services.

The peaceful strike action involving over thirty aggrieved workers was carried out on 15th May, 2017, in the presence of various company stakeholders including Site Manager, Mr. Joe.

The disappointed workers expressed frustration over the manner in which they have been maltreated under the supervision of Mr. Joe and what they described as incompetency on the side of management to effectively seek workers’ welfare.

According to them, the mining company never registered them with the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), they have no medical facility, and they are still paid below minimum wage. They accused the company of dishonoring its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

They are, therefore, calling on government to swiftly intervene for sanity to prevail among helpless citizens in that remote area and for management to see reason why they must stop sacking people without paying their benefit.

In an interview, the company’s Managing Director, Samba Kamara, said he had nothing to say on the matter because, he had been warning the Site Manager to quickly settle the matter.
