AIM donates 300 bags of rice to Port Loko
The National Coordinator of the Non-Governmental Organization, Amazonia Initiative Movement (AIM), Rugiatu Neneh Turay on Friday 3rd October 2014 handed over 60 bags of 50 kilogram rice to the Paramount Chief of Maforki Chiefdom, Adikali Malla II and 30 bags of rice to the Member of Parliament for Constituency 57, Koya Chiefdom all in the Port Loko District. The donation was made in the wake of Government’s quarantining of some chiefdoms in the District.
Earlier, the organization donated 300 bags of rice and other assorted food items worth millions of Leones to six chiefdoms in Port Loko District ahead of the three-day house to house Ebola campaign announced by Government from 19th to 21st September 2014.
The food items, which include bags of rice and bundles of water, were distributed to quarantined homes with special priority to women, children and the physically-challenged.
Rugiatu Neneh Turay informed the affected residents in Port Loko that the donation is to complement Government’s efforts to contain the outbreak with premium on community mobilization and clarified that the food items are mainly for the vulnerable who were identified by Paramount Chiefs, Headmen and Councilors in each chiefdom.
She also highlighted the impact of the disease on mostly women and children warning that if people do not strictly abide by the preventive measures, more deaths would occur, revealed that the three-day house-to-house Ebola campaign was to engage them through personal sensitization and contact tracing and reminded them that although there is no cure for the disease yet, but if people go early to hospitals, they can survive citing the over 400 people who have survived and discharged.
She further admonished the audience to abide by the preventive measures by regularly washing their hands with soap and water, avoid body contact and urged Government to allow medical teams to take the lead during the shutdown of the district.
Rugiatu Neneh Turay continued to appeal to the community to put aside their political differences and join Government eradicate the epidemic in the country in addition to the District Medical Team recruiting experienced medical practitioners in the community who can speak the local languages to sensitize the people about the disease.
Concluding, she also pleaded with Government to setup a counseling center in the District with trained personnel and assured the people of her organization’s continued support disclosing that similar donations would be made in other chiefdoms in the District.
The Paramount Chief of Maforki Chiefdom, Adikali Malla II, acclaimed Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay and her organization for the donation, described her philanthropist who caters for the welfare of her people and assured her of the people’s unflinching support and loyalty at all times.
The Paramount Chief further reminded beneficiaries that this is not the first time Rugiatu Neneh Turay has contributed to the development of the District citing her contributions to orphanage homes and deprived children through her organization.
The Chiefdom Speaker of Maforki Chiefdom, Mr. Mohamed Allieu Tarawallie, also commended Madam Turay for the laudable gesture, prayed that God richly reward her and assured that the gifts would reach the intended beneficiaries.
The beneficiaries also heaped praises on Madam Turay and her organization.
