The programme attracted a large crowd at a house at Dan Street on the theme, ‘’How a community becomes trustworthy,’’ and looked at ways on how to build and maintain peace in the community.
In his statement, the National Coordinator of Social Workers Sierra Leone, Mr. Hassan Koroma, stated that his organization handles social issues. He further stated that they have successfully worked in various communities in Freetown including Susan’s Bay, Mabala, and Kuntorloh,
In his comments, the Director of Artists United for Children and Youth Development, Mr. Ibrahim Mansaray, stated that looking at a country’s values, customs, traditions and beliefs, Fourah Bay is one of the areas that has a very rich culture and has contributed greatly in the propagation of Islam in this country. He mentioned how the ugly image of the community has been portrayed by the media.
“We must not sit and see the community continue to be battered and destroyed,” Mr. Mansaray stressed.
A participant, Mr. Mohamed Lamin Wilson, appealed to the organizers of the programme to help host this sensitization in other parts of Fourah Bay, as according to him, the programme was not only a life saving measure but it was also a tool for raising awareness in any community.
In his statement, the publisher of the arts and entertainment newspaper, Salone Jamboree, Mr. Murtala Mohamed Kamara, maintained that his tabloid was established four years ago to create a platform that will promote young people, especially local entertainers. He underscored the need for Sierra Leoneans to embrace each other and encourage peace in their various communities.
He re-echoed the rich cultural values of Islam in Fourah Bay and the good people it has produced for the country. He lamented how the young people were trying to reverse the good things bequeathed to them by their forefathers. He maintained that violence was not the right method to settle differences. He urged the Fourah Bay people to demonstrate good ethics and tell the world that there are only few bad people amongst them.
Also to address the meeting was Miss University Njala Beauty, Miss Josephine Kamara who expressed happiness for seeing a large turnout of decent people taking part in such a very important forum. She described the Fourah Bay community as a place where traditional, cultural, and recreational activities are highly practised and respected.
She was quick to tell the young people of the Fourah Bay community to develop good attitudes that will scare away bad boys in their midst and urged the young people to use their talents to promote peace, development and attract investment.
