International Quds Day celebrated

The Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation [IKRF] on Friday, 2nd August, 2013, at an Iftar ceremony, fed over three hundred Muslims fasting in this year’s holy month of Ramadan at the Iranian Cultural Centre on Garrison Street in Freetown.

In his remarks at the ceremony, the Cultural Chancellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Mohamed Reza Ghezel Sofla, noted that the Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation [IKRF] is a non Governmental organization based in Sierra Leone that has assisted a lot of Sierra Leoneans in diverse ways.

He pointed to the free computer skills training, which he said has given skills to many youths in information technology in the country.

Coinciding with the Iftar occasion was the International Quds Day, which was being commemorated at the Cultural Consulate in solidarity with the people of Palestine who have suffered in the hands of Israelis for far too long. This day is normally observed on the last Friday of every month of Ramadan. And this yea’s theme was “Freedom of Quds.”

In his brief remarks, the Chairman of the programme, Sheik Rashid Jalloh, said the Israeli/ Palestine war is not a war between Christians and Muslims as many people perceive it to be but a war for land.

According to him, one of the reasons for the observance of Quds Day is as a result of declaration made by the late Imam Rahoulla Khomeini to empathize with fellow Muslims in that part of the world.

In his statement, the Imam of the Freetown Central Mosque, Sheik Tejan Sillah, emphasized the issue of poverty, which he said has landed the people of Palestine in an irreparable problem, adding that the Israelis were able to confuse poor people of Palestine with money so that they could have access to their land.

He explained that after one hundred years later, the Israelis who had earlier begged to settle in some parts of Palestine turned out to claim ownership of this land with the claim that it was owned by them their forefathers.

He called on Muslims from around the world to sympathize and support the Palestinians in their struggle, noting that the Israelis want to have hegemony of that part of the world because it is the centre and a strategic location for escalating their nefarious activities.
