President Koroma Decorates Sierra Leone Football Legend
His Excellency the President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, awarded the country’s legendary footballer, Mohamed Kallon (in photo), the prestigious Order of the Rokel tittle, making the soccer star a member of the Rokel. The president gave the award during the country’s 52nd Independence Anniversary celebration.
Mohamed Kallon bagged the award along with several other outstanding Sierra Leoneans. Mohamed was given the award in recognition of the remarkable role he has been playing in promoting football in Sierra Leone.
Kallon started his football career with Old Edwardians FC, and later signed a professional contract with AL-Tadamansour in Lebanon.
Kallon became popular across the world when he played for Inter Milan in Italy with the likes of King Ronaldo of Brazil, Recoba, and several Italian internationals.
The Sierra Leone Gem, as he is fondly called, also played for Monaco in France, Chanba of China and also played in Saudi Arabia, and Greece before returning home and playing for FC Kallon, his bonafied club playing in the premiership.
Kallon started his career with Leone Stars in 1995 and at the age of 15, he became the youngest player ever to score for his national team when he scored against Burkina Faso in the 1996 African nation’s cup tournament in South Africa.
He has served the national team for about 18 years and he is the only football star in the world who has never taken his match bonus for his country.
Kallon has helped to promote several footballers through his local club and they are currently playing in Europe and elsewhere.
The football legend has a children’s foundation, radio station, night club, sports shop, and football mini stadium, thereby providing employment for several Sierra Leoneans.
He is always respected among Sierra Leoneans at all times for his patriotism, humility and respect for all.
Responding to the award, Mohamed Kallon expressed delight for being honored by Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, pledging to do more.
