Weah like Kallon; the face of football in Liberia and Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone’s first female football president, Madam Isha Johansen says Liberia’s George Weah is like Sierra Leone’s Mohamed Kallon (in photo) when it came to their industrious footballing career in their respective countries and was positive that both have done well in supporting women’s empowerment and change the face of football in Liberia and Sierra Leone respectively.
The Sierra Leone Football Association president was giving a lecture last Saturday at the Radisson Blu, Mammy Yoko Conference Hall at Aberdeen. The event was the 9th Annual Rajiv Bendre Women in Public Life Lecture Series organized by the 50/50 group in Sierra Leone with the theme “ When Women Win; We all Succeed”.
“George like Mohammed Kallon was the face of football in Liberia in the same manner Kallon is to football in Sierra Leone. Weah brought Liberia from obscurity to global prominence. In fact he brought a lot of goodwill to the African Continent through his football achievements. So too is our Mohamed Kallon and for me, both are the Didier Drogba of today,” she said.
Madam Johansen acknowledged the presence of Mohamed Kallon among the audience and related him to Rajiv Bendre whom she described as a man who is not in denial or a man who felt intimidated by the intellectual or social capacity of a woman.
However, speaking on her current role as the only female football president in the world, Madam Johansen said she wasn’t surprise that Sierra Leone is finding it hard to grasp and understand the uniqueness and the opportunities it can derive from what they have in their midst; one of their own daughters noting that she would have to leave that with Sierra Leone to figure out what they want to do with that.
She recalled this time last year when she was elected President of the Sierra Leone Football Association hoping that the audience can see the parallels she was trying to draw between her and the Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
“Being “The First” in one’s country is very laudable. You get the acknowledgment, and you will one day be written about in the history books.. Being “The only in the World” is an honor or a position you are not quite sure how to carry. I certainly do not know how to wear it. But trust me, I will figure it out soon. World and Country; two different weights to carry, I’m sure you will all agree with me,” the FA President said.
