NRA engages religious leaders on GST
As part of its continuous Tax Education effort on the dynamics of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the National Revenue Authority (NRA) on the 20th 21st and 23rd January 2010 held series of meetings with religious bodies in Sierra Leone. This included the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL), the Council of Imams of Sierra Leone, and the Council of Churches of Sierra Leone (CCSL).Â
A general understanding was reached between the NRA and these religious bodies that both parties would work in the interest of the nation. The NRA expressed confidence in the religious leaders in Sierra Leone as valuable agents of communication and potent opinion leaders with the capacity to influence and advance national development initiatives. The NRA expressed hope they would use their exalted position as “moral guarantors” in the state to help in educating the public about their moral and legal responsibilities to pay tax, and, specifically, about the dynamics of the GST, which will ultimately improve the lot of the common man by capacitating government to collect more revenues, and providing better services for the people within the borders of Sierra Leone.
The NRA reminded the religious leaders of their primary responsibility of not only preaching the word of God, but, as their being advocates for the impoverished majority, and thus, their obligation to support only those laws and actions which would improve the lives of the majority poor people in the country.
There was a consensus arrived at that the religious leaders will shortly take training on the details of the GST, in order to help in sensitizing their congregations, and the public, about the GST.
