Chief of Staff at State House, Dr. Kaifala Marah (in photo), has called on senior civil servants in Sierra Leone to show patriotism and responsibility while executing their duties.

Dr. Kaifala Marah made this remark while officially opening a two-day review retreat by the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO) at Hill Valley Hotel.

Speaking as Chairman of the opening ceremony, Dr. Marah presented a short overview on the status of the civil service in Sierra Leone, which he noted is currently improving under the current leadership at State House.

According to the State House Chief of Staff, positive leadership in the civil service is very instrumental for the development of Sierra Leone.  He cited two key points that civil service leaders must consider, which are, the nexus between transformation and culture, and the nexus between leadership and transformation.

Dr. Marah told senior civil servants that the current government is ahead of civil society in terms of policy formulation and access to knowledge; adding that such an element is one case why the nation experiences delays in project implementation by some ministries, departments, and agencies.

He called on civil society to show positive competitiveness in their jobs as the new agenda for prosperity includes a robust civil service.

Director General of the Public Sector Reform Unit, Dr. Julius Sandy, advised senior civil servants to implore bold and radical steps in transforming the civil service, noting that the Sierra Leone Civil service sector is facing challenging times.  Deputy Director General at HRMO M.R. Koroma said that the two-day retreat will be used to draw up a consolidated plan for the new civil service and to develop a shared understanding among MDA’s.
