Sierra Leone officially welcomed to the Olympic games
The official welcoming ceremony of the Sierra Leone delegation to this year’s Olympic Games was a colorful event over the weekend as the Sierra Lone High Commissioner to the UK, Eddie Turay, and staff from the embassy were in attendance. Also members of the Sierra Leone community and members of the Hastings UK friendship link, like former MP of Hastings UK Michael Foster, who was very instrumental to the training of the Sierra Leonean athletes in Hastings, and some members of the Hasting Group in the UK and Sierra Leoneans were also in attendance to be part of the Sierra Leone delegation for the official welcoming ceremony.
During the official ceremony there was a cultural performance of some members of cultural groups in the UK and the Sierra Leone flag was raised high and the country’s national anthem was sung. The chief de mission Unisa Deen Kargbo also presented a gift to the games village headman who in turn presented a gift to the Sierra Leone delegation.
The High Commissioner to UK, Eddie Turay, signed on behalf of the Sierra Leone delegation which marked the official welcoming of Sierra Leone to the games.
After the official welcoming ceremony HC Eddie Turay said the Olympic Games are all about peace, and for this reason they are happy that there is peace in Sierra Leone.
He also stated that never mind the number of athletes that is representing the country, they are determined to put the country on the map and that is why he tried to play a key role so that the Sierra Leone athletes will have pre-training in Hastings before the games.
Former MP of Hastings, Michael Foster, said the Hastings community are very happy to be part of this official welcoming ceremony of Sierra Leone and he described the official ceremony as superb. They are now looking forward to the athletes during the games to win medals. During their stay in Hastings, the Sierra Leone delegation have been wonderful to the Hasting Community, he said.
The Sierra Leone delegation in the games village include the two athletes Ola Sesay and Ibrahim Turay, chief de mission Unisa Deen Kargbo, Abu Batalomen Kamara – Coach, Pamela Williams – Chaperone, and Doctor – Patrick Coker.
