Sierra Leone’s Ola Sesay failed to qualify to the final at the 2012 Olympics
One of Sierra Leone’s hopefuls in this year’s London 2012 Olympic Games, Ola Sesay, on Tuesday evening August 7th failed to qualify to the final of the women’s long jump when she was ranked 12th in her group with a jump of 6.22 meters.
In the overall ranking Ola Sesay was placed 23 out of 32. After the event Ola Sesay said that she felt very bad as she was unable to reach the final and at least secure a medal for the country in such big games like the Olympics, which was her aim and objective but during the jump she did not know what actually went wrong.
She went further to appeal to Sierra Leoneans that all is not yet over and promised to live up to the expectation in the coming games.
Before going to the games Ola Sesay’s best jump was 6.71 meters which she qualified with to the games. During the qualifications 7 athletes from the 12 athletes that qualified for the final came from that group which included Shara Proctor from Great Britain who came first with a jump of 6.83 meters, in second position was Karin Mey Melis from Turkey with a jump of 6.80, then Elena Sokolova from Russia with a jump of 6.71, Nastassia Mironchyk–Ivanova from BLR with a jump of 6.66 meters, Lyudmila Kolchanoval also of Russia with a jump of 6.57 meters, Brittney Reese of USA with a jump of 6.57 meters and Ivana Spanovic of SBR with a jump of 6.41 meters. That means that Sierra Leone is out the 2012 Olympic games.
The first time that Sierra Leone took part in the Olympic Games was in 1968 by a team of three which participated in the fields of boxing and athletics.
In the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Sierra Leone’s light heavyweight Israel Cole reached the quarter finals, while in the 1992 Olympic Games Heptathlete Eunice Barber competed in the 100m hurdles, long jump and heptathon.
At the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games Eunice finished 5th with 6,342 points which was only 147 points off the bronze medal place and she later represented France at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
