Ecobank Refurbishes Pediatric Ward at Connaught Hospital
Pan African Bank, Ecobank, has handed over to the government of Sierra Leone and the management of the Connaught Hospital keys to the newly refurbished Pediatric Ward of the hospital as part of their corporate social responsibility on Tuesday April 10th.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the Managing Director of Ecobank, Clement Dodoo described the event as historic. He said they are happy that Ecobank has got the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of the healthcare delivery sector in Sierra Leone.
He said as a corporate institution they believe that they should not just contribute to any project for the sake of contribution but prefer to support projects that will make a greater difference in the lives of many people.
Mr. Dodoo said their decision to refurbish the children’s ward at Connaught came as a natural choice for them knowing the impact it would have on children.
The MD said they are officially adopting the Children’s Ward of the Connaught Hospital, meaning the relationship they have just established with the hospital will continue to blossom adding that Ecobank’s example will inspire other corporate institutions in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the government of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation while receiving the keys, Minister Zainab Hawa Bangura describe Ecobank’s venture a positive one as it seeks to improve the free healthcare initiative in the country. She said the Connaught Hospital which was established in 1912 by the Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur, has now become a central tertiary Government referral and teaching hospital in Sierra Leone .
Zainab Bangura said since the introduction of the free healthcare initiative by President Koroma, considerable improvements have been made in the healthcare delivery services in the country. She said the system has manifested greater impact especially in the number of operations carried out on children in the ages of 0-5 years which has jumped from 27% to500% covering a period from April, 2010 to December 2011.
She applauded Ecobank for their continued commitment in boosting the country’s health sector and said they as a government are hoping that other private sectors will follow suit in the precedence they have set so far.
The newly refurbished pediatric ward was named after Professor Olubuyi Robbin Coker in honour of his outstanding services in the pediatric ward and for also being one of the key pioneers who established the medical school in Sierra Leone.
