NEC launches Accra electoral principle

National Electoral Commission (NEC) Tuesday 15th launched the Accra Principle of Electoral Justice as a pilot for the conduct of successful elections for the soon to come 2012 elections.

NEC Chief Electoral Officer, Christiana Thorpe (in photo), told stakeholders at the launch that the Accra Principle of Electoral Justices (APEJ) is meant to encourage electoral standards and dignities thus requiring full civic participation from all stakeholders in the country.

She said nevertheless that it is milestone in the history of electioneering process inSierra Leone.

That Sierra Leone has practically joined Ghana and Kenya piloting the project 18 months project.

NEC Regional Commission West, Mitta French also gave an overview of the APEJ, adding, “It is good for the electoral process. The composition of the body that will take charge in the running the process are drawn from MDNA’s, civil societies, SLAJ, IMC, ONS, LAWSCLA, LAWYERS and other institutions in the country.

Launching the pilot project, the Inspector General of Police, Francis Allieu Munu said such a project will surely place Sierra Leone among the countries that prepare to be master of their own process internationally.

That it will also make Sierra Leone a proud country.

He said impartiality and fairness should be their focus in bringing confidence to the process and that people’s social contract must be protected.

He thanked NEC staff for their relentless effort in making the process a success.
