Sierra Leone government secures 40 buses for SLRTC

Government through the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, National Commission for Privatization, and Sierra Leone Road Transport Cooperation (RTC) has secured 40 new buses to ease the problem of transportation countrywide.

The offer came amidst efforts of the solid administrative foundation of SLRTC’s current General Manager, Mr. Bockarie Kamara and board members, under whose tenure the cooperation had managed to procure its first set of buses (12 in number) in November 2009; which to all was record making history at SLRTC.

The 40 buses which had cost the government of Sierra Leone a sum totaling Le 9 billion are to commence operations by mid-December this 2011.

“It is no doubt that such will help augment SLRTC completion of payment of it second loan at Ecobank,” the General Manager said.

In his statement, the financial analyst on transport at the national commission for privatization (NCP), Madam Josephine said the delay in the arrival of the buses came owing to SLRTC requests to having all the buses loaded in one vessel.

It could be recalled that the difficulty in accessing commercial vehicular transportation inSierra Leonehas long existed way before the establishment of the Sierra Leone Road Transport Cooperation (SLRTC).

And that SLRTC was established by government to help remedy the problem of transportation in the country while at the same time generate income for its creator.

Conversely, that is not the case at all, as over 40 years now, Sierra Leoneans have endured the worst in transportation from both the SLRTC and private sector.

It hoped however that with the arrival of these 40 buses, the old aged problem of transportation within and outsideFreetownwill surely be put to rest.
