Climate of uncertainty

Climate of uncertainty

It is incumbent upon every Sierra Leonean to imbibe a little sense of history if only to protect our young democracy.  This should be tinted with a spirit of tolerance in all spheres of life.

It should serve as the recipe in our forward march to 2012.  For that reason, we must prepare ourselves as a people determined to preserve our peace and democracy, come 2012, the signpost of a stable future. Anything short of this, Sierra Leone should be ready for the worse.

We are not prophets of doom, but gauging the political mood in the country following the election of the flag bearer of the main opposition party and the sound bites emanating from that election, it is like the recipe we are preparing for 2012 would be one of disaster.

This might sound a wishful thinking to the ears of some people but, like some concerned citizen pointed out the other day, Sierra Leoneans are not learning any lesson from history.

By our own estimation as a medium, the best way to consolidate our peace is to maintain our democratic credentials.

Sadly though, even before 2012, we have begun to witness acrimonious discourse between and among various political opponents, thus creating unnecessary tension among the civil populace.

The ruling party, in particular is not helping the situation. By making copious references to the past in the vein attempt to discredit the opposition flag bearer is outrageous, to say the least. That is no good democratic ethics.

The ruling party held its national delegate convention in Makeni in 2009 and elected their leader without opening the contest to other interested candidates, but no one made any official comment about it.

This medium will be kind enough to advise the APC to save their breath and remain quiet over the choice of Maada Bio as presidential aspirant for the opposition SLPP. After all, the ultimate choice of a leader for this country rests with the people in 2012.

Let’s leave the final verdict to them and truly respect their wish.

This is what democracy is all about!

To continue to draw references from the past and making threatening innuendoes will only help to confuse the minds of the people.

Thus, the year 2012 is as crucial as it continues to create a climate of uncertainty as we head for elections next year. Too sad!

  • Foday, tell them . Victor Foh of all people talking about blood on their hands. This a democracy, people are going to vote for who they have something in common with.

When APC democratically elects a southerner as a presidential cansidate, then we can talk.

Why is it OK for the APC to attain 90% of the votes in port loko, Bombali and Tonkolili and APC is not viewed as a Temne Limba Party?

Why is ok for Ernest koroma to appoint 80% of his ministerrs from the north and APC is not viewed as tribalistic?

Give me a break , SLPP is no more tribalistic than APC. APC is a temne-limba-loko party period and SLPP is southern based. lets get over it and deal with the issues.

Please discuss the issues hampering Sierra Leone’ development.

  • The last two comments posted under the name of Foday Bangura is not the Foday Bangura that posted the comment on August 10 at 9:22 AM. Some of you folks need to stop being cowards and use your original names to post comments. As you can see my views on the article are not the same as the nincompoop that posted comments at 11;28 AM and 11:56AM

  • I forgot the bigotry being spewed by Ali Baba Voucher Gate Foe whose kleptocratic behaviour in the seventies left most hard working Sierra Leoneans and their families without salaries thereby not able to take care of everyday necessities. Victor Foe, what happened to your lost father? There were rumours that you guys sold him or sacrificed him to perpetrate your thiefing spree. Your Ambassador sister in Liberia (turned pastor) was notorious for stealing the government’s allocations to the Magburuka people. Ngo Highway paddy, please answer to these missiles before you start talking about Maada Bio, who was still in his infancy when you were busy stealing from his father. Shege!!!

  • The article you wrote is well done and in the interest of peace and stability for a country and people that have undergone much suffering in the recent past. Most of these people commenting negatively on the nomination of Maada Bio to be the flag bearer of the SLPP come 2012, are those comfortably sitting in Europe, North America and elsewhere shamelessly enjoying the citizens of those countries’ taxes in the name of asylum seekers. The APCs need to be reminded of the atrocities of Bambay Kamara, Siaka Stevens and others who killed in cold blood people like Kaikai, John Bangura Khazalie, Ibrahim Taqi and numerous others when they tried to advice the then strong man whose kids are still holding important positions in the present day government. APC sympathizers clean up your cup boards and mind your own business. By the way a word for the SLPP campaign team, hire well trained investigative journalists to dig and get out the truth of our polity to the public. Search outside your amaturist contributors who dream and wake up with some zealous ideas. Search for names like Mwenda, Obbo in East Africa. Your readership will grow 100 fold.

  • Yankay,
hold your PEACE the people will decide. Infact I dont see any need for all this hue and cry about Bio. If he was not elected by the SLPP will there be all this noise. The hue and cry should be about the candidates manifestos viz the development of the country. We are waiting to see what the candidates will put on the table.

Right now APC are in the driving seat; instead of wasting all this energy on Bio, they should be rushing to finish projects they have started. At the end of the day they will be judged by projects completed and improvements in the lives of Sierra Leoneans.
SLPP can choose whoever they want, but the people of Sierra Leone will have the final say.

All I pray for is an atmosphere of peace and stability. Both parties have a responsibility to behave maturedly, without intimidation and violence.

We should start treating our politicians as servants let them tell the nation how well they have served and how much more they are going to serve us. They should be treated as job seekers. We the people should stop fighting each other for politicians.
As soon as elections come they start preaching tribalism and all the isms to divide the people of Sierra Leone. After elections they only care about themselves, family and cronies.

As far as I am concerned we only have TWO BIG TRIBES IN SIERRA LEONE. THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS. Both parties are equally responsible for the current state of affairs. Fifty years after independence our people are still ignorant and in the dark because our leaders prefer to leave them uneducated and illiterate to continue to manipulate them.

SEM is right “Let’s leave the final verdict to them and truly respect their wish.
This is what democracy is all about!”

  • Once a TYRANT is always a TYRANT and it is incumbent upon all of us to educate every voting age Sierra Leone about the background of any political candidate and allow them to make an informed choice come 2012. It does not in any mean that the APC is embarking on any political witch-hunt. EBK was not a part of the violence prone Sheki regime of the APC and to date he has proven to us that democracy can indeed work in Africa.Bio’s past with the NPRC regime and his association with Weed smoking violence prone thugs as his supporters leaves nothing for some of us to give him the benefit of the doubt. His remarks or more or less threats against the APC regime in 2007 should prove to anyone that this guy cannot be trusted with the keys to state house.

  • Fellow citizen peace will rein in Sierra Leone by any means necessary. For whosoever forement war in Sierra Leone now will pay a bitter price internationally. He or she will be arrested an have a taste of Charles Taylor kind of freedom in the Hague. He used to call himself a warlord.Just as you say in your article we tend to forget history easily as an, upright thinking people. What wrong with us only God knows.
My only worries here , per say if this Maada bio guy is elected and because of his Human right records , the international committee did not like ,appreciate or want him. Then little did we learn from history. Hope you understand my point am trying to make . Having say that am 99.9% certain the people of Sierra Leone {the majority)will not vote for him. How country is poor financially for us to have a wheel chair bound President like Maada Bio. Beside God know what his plans are again this time round . More public and private executions again God Knows. Today some of us have seen the freedom you journalists are enjoying .Some of our journalist brothers suffered a lot yesterday . Is that history not good for us to be worried even though we are not afraid any more. What is History. The ruling party are only concerned because of the records of this candidate. Ain’t you?. If no What is history ? Am only learning.
Beware of green snakes in green grass. SLPP only have intentions when it comes to national developments. Actions are far fetched. You see am liberal I will have vote for SLPP if they were good in office towards national development but they are not . I visited Salone many times from 2000 to 2006 my eyes see nothing good in terms of development. With APC now in power I can see they are travelling . And some of us know the journey is not easy due to some local and international effects. But I leave that topic for another bombshell. PEACE
