Becoming The Envy Of Democracy & Peace In Africa!
The political history of Sierra Leone has been punctuated with bloodshed and violence, culminating in the ten years rebel war waged by the nearly defunct Revolutionary United Front from the early 90s to the early 20s.
Even in recent times, this ugly trend of killings and shedding of innocent blood all in the name of fighting for power, has persisted, much to the disdain of well-meaning Sierra Leoneans.
The most recent incident of death emanating from electioneering is barely a month ago in the eastern district of Kailahun during the campaign for a vacant parliamentary seat in constituency 010 and ward12 for councilor.
Following the eruption of violent confrontation between the independent candidate, formerly of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party; and the substantive candidate of the same party, police swiftly intervened and quelled the escalating violent situation, but not before the loss of life and displacement of poor and innocent residents who took to their heels into the nearby bushes and safe villages for dear life. It was reminiscent of the brutal rebel war that also started in the same district in March 1991.
As the elections are being conducted today, Saturday, 26th February 2021, it is our fervent hope that all parties and election stakeholders conduct themselves within the remit of the code of conduct prescribed by law to avoid violence that will discredit the outcome of the elections and or result in the destruction of life and property.
We are concerned not only about the much needed resources that partners and the government would have pumped into the conduct of these by-elections, but equally concerned about the need to graduate into a civilized culture of democratic credentials and become the envy of democracy and peace in Africa.
