NGO deplores educational system
Education Programme Co-ordinator Save the Children Sierra Leone, Mr. James Brima, has lambasted the current state of education in the country, describing it as deplorable and in need of more attention and commitment.
According to Mr. Brima, education must be given priority over a lot of what is currently being put ahead by the government as negligence of the relevance of education leads to the underdevelopment of that nation.
The education coordinator went on to state that much attention must be given to the education of the girl child which, he said is being seriously undermined in the country as the girl child education is very much disproportionate to that of the male children. “How do they want the country to develop when the very essence of development is being neglected with reckless abandon,” he said, and highlighted that one of the reasons for the country being ranked low in terms of human development is because illiteracy abounds. “If we don’t give our children the needed education how do we want them to be termed a develop nation in the future?” Mr. Brima said.
On the issue of the activities of Save The Children, Mr. Brima informed Sierra Express Media that Save the Children is an NGO in Sierra Leone catering to improve and develop the educational standards of children living in less privileged and venerable communities in the country.
The presence of the organization he said is felt in almost all parts of the country from the Western Region of the country to far east in Kailahun, Pujehun in the southern province, Kono also in the eastern province and Freetown in the western area including Susan’s Bay and Kroo-Bay communities.
“Our NGO is operating hand in glove with the government of Sierra Leone through the ministry of Education, Youths and Sports to improve the standard of education in schools particularly in the primary school facilities,” he said.
“Save the children is in support of schools in every part of the country including the East, South and the Western Area.”
