SCSL Wraps Up Judgment on RUF Top Men

The long awaited trial on the RUF leaders has finally come to an end this week. The three Revolutionary United Front (RUF) top men Issa Hassan Sesay and Morris Kallon were convicted on 16 counts charges and Augustine Gbao convicted on 13 counts of 18 indictments charging them with atrocities committed against the people of Sierra Leone. According to the courts prosecutor Joseph Kamara “the suffering inflicted by the RUF on the people of this country is beyond words” and so deserve to be convicted.

Deforestation on the Rampage in Salone

As the issue of global warming is hovering over us, one wonders how much the government of Sierra Leone is doing about those who cut down of trees in our forests indiscriminately. In the recent UN’s General Assembly conference in Copenhagen in Denmark the topical issue was on climate change came up and Sierra Leone featured prominently in the topics discussed where President Koroma was present.

The main motive behind the discussion was to remind nations about their responsibility to save the planet from this global phenomenon. As the richer countries have their own responsibilities to be fulfilled, poorer countries like Sierra Leone have their own moral obligation to help ameliorate the spate of deforestation. In this vein, Sierra Leoneans are worried over the activities of logging industries around the country like is done by the Taakor timber industry operating in Tama Tonkolili and the Kambui forest reserve in Kenema District.

OGI Brings People Closer

The Open Government Initiative (OGI) has been commended by civil society for its success in the numerous town hall meetings held in Kenema, Kabala and Pujehun. The OGI initiative accords the people the chance to express themselves on issues that hinge on their welfare. The initiative also creates room for transparency and accountability in governance and public service to the nation. The drive by OGI has urged members of parliament to visit their constituencies thereby bringing government to the door steps of the people.
