Woman President to take over after Ernest Koroma

The call for the next president of Sierra Leone to be a female after the term of Head of State Ernest Bai Koroma has ended has gathered momentum with both professionals and women grass root community leaders adding their voice to the call.

“We the women of Sierra Leone will leave no stone untouched to see that our voices are heard and we are given the opportunity to play a pivotal role in governance as equally as the men and even play a central role in all the sectors of life in the country,” said 50/50 President Madam Harriet Turay.

Mrs. Harriet Turay made this statement in an exclusive interview with Sierra Express Media.

According to the 50/50 president, the level of marginalization among women by the men in Sierra Leone is “at an alarming rate and therefore needs urgent action by stakeholders to address the situation and look into the concern of women in the country.”

Giving a positive outlook of women dominating in all sectors in Sierra Leone, Madam Turay said they can now boast of a Brigadier in the National Army. She also mentioned women in the banking sector, in the Sierra Leone police and in the medical profession as doctors.

“So with these inroads in almost all government and private entities, the women in the country are heading towards the big plan of producing a female candidate for presidency after Ernest Bai Koroma,” she said confidently.

She said the 50/50 organization is now engaged in a very high sensitization work among women in the Provinces to gather their support for a mass support of a female candidate.

Madam Harriett Turay also said the women being the mothers, caretakers and above all suckling mothers, they will be able to rule Sierra Leone in a more unique, attractive and efficient manner as compared to the opposite sex. “If we are able to take good care of our homes, let the men give us the opportunity to get to the seat of power and they will begin to see the uniqueness of women in politics,” she said.

“Women have been keeping away from politics because of the level of violence associated with the politics in Sierra Leone, this is a contributing factor why women are shying away from politics, also due to deliberate deprivation, the women are financially bankrupt so this is also a contributing factor for women staying away from the politics in our country,” Turay concluded..
