APC MP abandons his constituency
Hon. Captain (Rtd.) Abdul Rahman Kamara has abandoned his Constituency 101 community which includes Kissy New Site, and is said to be out of touch with the people who voted him in power, investigations reveal.
Some residents of Constituency 101 reveal they have not ever set eyes on Honourable Rahman and some are even going with the belief that government has no plans for this part of the city.
The Member of Parliament is said to be residing in the West End of Freetown and that since the day he was voted in, he has never visited his constituency.
Reports further reveal there is no medical problem or otherwise from causing his absence, and reports indicate he attends Parliament. “He goes everywhere but not here in this constituency,” said a market woman in the community.
The Honourable is reported to have been granted the APC symbol not because of his popularity in the community but as a means of repaying him for his role in the government of Joseph Saidu Momoh. “I only heard about Captain Rahman Kamara during the military junta of Captain Strasser and since then I have not heard anything about him except that he is now our new member of Parliament,” said Mr. Korji, an elderly resident of New Site where the constituency covers.
Residents have also complained that Hon. Rahman Kamara has never convened any meeting to discuss issues affecting the constituency.
“These types of politicians only come to the people and hold meetings during the campaign period, and after that it is over with the people,” said Pa Morseray Kabba, a land and house owner in New Site Shell.
Residents of Constituency 101 decry the inactivity of the Honourable in abandoning his constituency, which they say has resulted in lack of development in the community. They highlighted the deplorable condition of the Parsonage Street area and other side streets and said the Sierra Leone Roads Authority has not undertaken any work here.
Residents of Constituency 101 expressed appreciation to private individuals who have contributed their personal funds to repair the road. The youth volunteer group, Friends of New Site, in their own contribution erected street signs to help identify the various routes.
Repeated calls have been reportedly made to the local Attitudinal and Behavioural Change office, but said nothing has been done to correct this anomaly. “We do not even know how to go about informing the government and the Parliament that our own MP is not even seen here with us,” said Mr. Abass Kamara, also a resident of New Site.
Meanwhile some constituents have vowed to make a representation to the Speaker of the House and to the APC National Secretary General Mr. Victor Bockarie Foh. President Ernest Koroma will hear about this,” one vowed angrily.
The Honourable member has not been available for his comment. “He does not even have a house or rent a place here,” said housewife Haja Conteh. This was confirmed by Miss Jestina Kutubu, a youth activist in the community who said the honourable is neither residing in his constituency nor is he maintaining a place there.
