900 Okada riders put out of job

Over nine hundred bike (Okada) riders have been put out of a job due to the spontaneous raid conducted by the Western Area Traffic Management (WATM) led by Inspector Flavius Saidu Sesay.

This was made known to this press by the Inspector Sesay at a police press conference hosted as the police headquarter last week.

The raid, this press reliably learnt, came as a result of the many concerns and complaints from members of the public including parliamentarians about the way and manner Okada riders have been conducting themselves within the central business district.

Inspector Sesay said on countless occasions they have engaged the bike riders to desist from plying the central business district but to no avail.

Quite recently, the Chairman of the Bike Riders Association in Freetown, Mr. Tucker was contacted in order for him to work with the police to see how best they could work to protect the passengers and commuters alike so that his colleagues are not removed from the road.

The bike riders chairman never showed up for the meeting, the police told this press. So when the police went after the unruly bike riders, they started throwing stones at the police.

Scores of policemen sustained severe injuries, Inspector Sesay said, adding that the lawless bike riders took upon themselves to set ablaze B Divisional Headquarters but they met stiff resistance with the police which led to the arrest of over 40 bike riders.

All of them have been charge to court, Inspector disclosed, emphasizing that the raid will last till August 22nd thereafter the police will come out with a public statement as to what they intend to do with the impounded bikes.

Sesay mentioned that hundreds of people are presently hospitalized at the Emergency Hospital at Goderich due to the reckless manner Okadas ride their motor bikes.
