High speculation over Tejan Cole’s resignation

As government business is everybody’s business, speculation has been going on with regards former Anti Corruption Commission’s (ACC) boss, Mr. Abdul Tejan Cole’s resignation over a month ago both at home and abroad.

It could be recalled that when the former Anti-graft boss took exit, speculations were rife as many raised eyebrows over Cole’s sudden exit from the Commission. However, Mr. Cole’s downing of tool in the fight against endemic corruption caused ripples, leaving several questions unanswered in people’s mind, especially so when the trial of the corruption concerning the former Fisheries and Marine Resources minister, Haja Afsatu Kabba was ongoing.

Presently,  as the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma is hell-bent on unearthing and waking the ghost of the dead, concerned citizens and those in the Diaspora are posed to know why President Koroma has not made any statement over the former Commissioner’s resignation as the doubt is still hanging in the air.

The weeks following Mr. Tejan Cole’s resignation in May this year hinted that he had secured a lucrative job in the United States; some say the Gambia, whilst others were with the fervent conviction that his resignation insinuated political interference in his job.

But whatever might have been the cause that prompted his untimely departure from the Commission at the time when the Commission needed him the most, Sierra Leoneans want to know the reasons behind his resignation and what has been government’s stance on this crucial aspect of our democracy.

It has been speculation and rumour mongering as usual in work places, entertainment centres and other public places with respect to the mystery behind the resignation. How can someone abandon a sensitive job just like that; it’s incredible, people would say.

Cole’s resignation also sent an ominous sign, providing a credibility gap in the leadership of the APC. “This is amazing, if considers the time and trouble one goes through to secure a job in this country; its like the vain search of the ‘Grail’ in Dan Brown’s “Da Vinci’s Code,” one young graduate from Fourah Bay College lamented, adding that one could hardly comprehend why the legal luminary resigned from his lucrative position”,

Moreover, as the issue of corruption in Africa and in Sierra Leone in particular has become a major concern the international community, one would not imagine a man of Mr. Tejan Cole’s caliber would abandon a sensitive job as boss of the ACC without a reason. Interestingly, in Africa, there is a popular proverb in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart that says “a toad does not run in a day time for nothing”. Certainly, there must be that the toad is after something or something is after the toad.

Mr. Tejan Cole’s sudden resignation is still shrouded in mystery which is yet to be unraveled. Thus, it is against this backdrop that the people are demanding to know the truth around Tejan Cole’s resignation from an office that is being regarded as the ‘Eye’ that serves as the barometer of sound democratic governance.

Nonetheless, according to public opinion gathered by Sierra Express Media the importance and sensitive nature of the Anti-Graft Commission should not be overlooked by the ruling APC government. In addition, some citizens of this country have confided in SEM that the popularity of the APC is inextricably connected to the viability of the said Commission. Therefore, the vacuum that has been created by Mr. Tejan Cole’s absence has already dented the party’s integrity ahead of 2012, they explained.

Mr. President, speculations are high, what is your take on these?
