Zain will beat NATCOMs deadline!

At the request of the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), existing and new subscribers of cellular networks in the country are expected to register their SIM Cards before 30th June 2010 for security reasons.  NATCOM has since late last year directed all telecom operating companies to put all necessary arrangements in place for the smooth take off of the SIM registration, which is aimed at improving security in the country.

What this means is that all prepaid and postpaid SIM cards would be directed to have their ownership particulars recorded with the network operators as from 30th June 2010. After the period ends, non-registered SIM cards will be registered invalid.

The basis given for this new guideline was that it will augment security, help eliminate fraud and crime, and improve upon the risk environment of businesses, redounding to the ultimate benefit of the ordinary subscriber who shall be better able to reclaim lost numbers, link their phone numbers to other commercial accounts, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that their lines are secure, which is all assured on the Zain Sierra Leone platform. The Commission also boarded on the registration process as a matter of National Interest in collaboration with the Office of National Security together with the Ministry of Information. The SIM card registration, which is in tandem with international best practices, is purposely intended to track down criminals bent on using cell phones to commit crimes.

This SIM registration process will provide a greater database of market information of mobile phone technology in the country, thus ending disputes around the market leader. It will also help combat cell phone theft as it will be easier to trace the SIM card and the phone.

At the commencement of a nationwide subscriber registration and sensitization programme aimed to raise public awareness and approval about the execution of such an exercise, the Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications of Zain Sierra Leone, Kelvin E. Kellie said the company has over the years demonstrated its commitment to partnering with government and authoritarian organizations as a sign of guarantee in the quest for growth and to also play the expected role  of an diligent leader in the development of the country. As a law abiding and responsible company that cares for its family, Zain has sought to create all possibilities just to create an easy way to register their numerous and valued customers. Zain understanding the plight of people working all hours of the day to find bread to put on the table have put in place, registration centers at all Zain offices and within the western area. Zain Sierra Leone has doubled its effort to ensure that it meets NATCOM’s June 30th SIM registration deadline of all its subscribers. There are also employed free-lancers in mobile teams calling on doorsteps and also in offices of our valued subscribers to do this registration.  Indeed Zain is making it very easy for its family, unlike other telecom companies who don’t seem to understand the importance and need of this exercise. Zain only needs to take into record subscriber’s name, phone number, address, and a photograph. These are the specific requirements needed from the subscriber at no cost to them, to ensure the smooth flow of the process. Looking at the fast rate Zain is moving in acquiesce with NATCOM’s directive, it is believed that indeed Zain will beat the deadline.
