We demand justice now!
We were rudely shocked by the sad news of the death of a final year honours student in the newly approved Faculty of Communication, Media and Information Studies (CMIS), formerly Mass Communication Department at Fourah Bay College, USL.
Santigie Karankay Conteh, in his prime, was said to have been shot twice at close range by armed robbers at his residence at Leicester Road in mid-July this year leading to his untimely death just at the verge of completing his undergraduate studies in Communications. He passed off at Emergency Hospital where he could not respond to treatment.
We note with strong reservation, this trend of cold-blooded murder perpetrated by some hoodlums against innocent citizens with no tangible outcomes of so-called police investigation, let alone the effective pursuit of justice.
Just a couple of months ago, two young sisters, one of whom was a student at the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) were murdered in the residence on Regent road, Lumley in very suspicious circumstances; and to-date, justice has neither been heard of nor seen to be done.
In yet another harrowing instance, a lecturer in the English department at Fourah bay College, was callously killed in his apartment and is yet to come out of in the way of justice and police investigation.
With such a gloomy trend of brutal killings and inaction by the police, we wonder what fate holds for our people. The lack of security has become a more than worrying matter and the apathy of the police and the criminal justice system has compounded the problem with the result of a cloud of fear hanging over the society; no one has any reason to believe that they are safe.
We are calling on the police to expeditiously bring the culprits to book for justice to be delivered and halt the pernicious cycle of impunity. We demand justice!
