A plea for justice over alleged suicide of Korean businessman!
The news broke out on Social Media and subsequently reported in the press about an alleged suicide committed by a Korean businessman, who said he took his life due injustice he suffered in the hands of the authorities in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
According to the content of a letter dated 2nd July 2021, the day Kim Sung Nyeon allegedly took his own life, the Korean investor had been doing business in the fishing sector for approximately thirty years and provided employment to hundreds of Sierra Leoneans in addition to his generosity. He bitterly accused government officials at the ministry of gross injustice and lack of competence in the management of the sector.
His passionate message to potential investors not to make Sierra Leone their destination for lack of justice equally triggers a feeling of hate for Sierra Leonean nationals in not just Korea, but other parts of Asia in sympathy of Korea; putting them in danger.
We view such a statement as worrying and giving a bad impression about the country to the world. Besides, it has the potential of scaring away potential investors at a time when the Government is so desperate to woo investment in order to boost the private sector for economic growth. The desperation of Government in this direction was displayed by the President’s many travels in the first two years of governance in a wild search for investors.
The circumstances leading the Korean national to put an end to his life indeed smacks of something fishy and therefore require a sincere probe. The Government has put out an official communication stating that an administrative investigation will be instituted into the incident.
We are saddened by the incident and plead with the authorities to expedite efforts to bring to justice anyone found wanting in the discharge of their duty, which would have warranted Kim to take this bold and unenviable action in a foreign land, leaving his family in everlasting shock and hatred for our country.
It is in the interest of the Government and Sierra Leoneans in and out of the country to get to the bottom of this and set the record straight.
