Dwarzark residents raise alarm
Residents at Dwarzark have called for urgent action to be taken against people disposing garbage in drainages that run through the community as there is a tendency for potential flooding if action is not taken now.
According to Mr John Fafira Kamara residing close to the drainage “the disposing of garbage is a major problem for us here as it pollutes the water and breeds mosquitoes”, adding that people use the water for laundering and other household purposes.
According to the Deputy Mayor at the Freetown City Council (FCC) Mr Osman T. Koroma, council has employed youths and have also brought tricycles and wheelbarrows that are charged with the responsibility of collecting garbage in communities within the Freetown Municipality. “Inspectors are also going round to inspect houses and compounds that are filthy”, he said.
“We will also conduct inspection in different communities bring culprits to book”, said Mr Koroma.
“Every year due to the dumping of waste in drainages, during the raining season it becomes difficult for the water to flow freely and this affect our structures”, a resident said.
Garbage disposal along water passage areas needs urgent and firm action to prevent potential occurrence of flooding in communities if not adequately addressed before the starting of heavy rains.
