As Le 100m Deal Backfires Human Trafficker in Court

A gold miner in Ngo Town, Kono District, has appeared before Magistrate Dr. Abu Bakarr Binneh Kamara on a count indictment of Human Trafficking Contrary to Section 2(1) of the Anti-Human Trafficking Act 2005.

The accused on Tuesday 21st February, 2017, in the Upper Moyiba community, unlawfully engaged in the trafficking out of Freetown Hassan Kamara, a child of Aminata Bangura, doing so without the consent of the mother.

The accused is unrepresented whilst Inspector Umu Hawa Bah is prosecuting the matter.

In his testimony, the victim, Hassan Kamara said he lives at No. 30 Moyiba, off Black Hall Road, Freetown, and is a class-six pupil of the National Pentecostal Primary School.

He told the court that on the 21st February, 2017, he was on his way to his friend when the accused, Mohamed Kamara, met him and cajoled him to go with him to Kono. The accused, he went on, took him to Grafton to his mother and bought him some cloths and food. He said that the mother of the accused asked Mohamed to where he was taking the boy and Mohamed replied that he was taking him to Kono.

According to the victim, the accused told his mother that the boy was like a brother to him. He furthered that the accused took him to Kono the following day and put him into a taxi which took them to a nearby bush.

“The accused then told the taxi driver that he wanted to sell me for Le 100 million and the driver bargained for Le 70 million  but he insisted on the Le 100 million without suspecting that the driver was a police officer,” the victim narrated further.

Hassan Kamara told the court that when the driver later identified self as being a police officer and wanted to apprehend the accused, a fight ensued but the officer succeeded in arresting the accused and took him to the family Support Unit, Harbor Division. The matter was later adjourned to the 6th of June, 2017.
