Do We Have a Ministry of Country and Town Planning in Sierra Leone?

I have only understood the way a Ministry of Country and Town Planning works through my travel to other countries.

In Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Rwanda, the Ministry of Country and Town Planning designs in advance the structures to be constructed in each community.

Some areas are planned to have single flats while others are designed to have storey buildings. Before a plot of land is sold,  each relevant ministry steps in to draw its own plan.

The Lands and Works  Ministries make access roads. The Water, Health and Sanitation ministries design the installation water and sewage pipes. The ministry of Energy and Power install transmitters and pass electric cables.

In my own Sierra Leone, people just build “fiti fata”! And when flooding occurs, we hypocritically invoke the name of God.

The Lands ministry is, in effect, part of the root causes of the  problem.

Take a look at this community and tell me if it doesn’t portray a failed society characterised by land grabbing, chaos and social disorder.

The risks of landslides are very strong here. There are no access roads and people are free to build what they want anywhere and anyhow.
