Port Loko Government Hospital Gets New Diagnostic equipment

The equipment which includes an X-Ray, Ultra Sound and Scanning machines installed at the Diagnostic Wing of the hospital will help upgrade the hospital that has for a long period of time gone without these facilities thereby posing serious challenges for health professionals to investigate and reports illnesses.

Making the dedication of the diagnostic equipment, the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brima Kargbo said his journey as medical practitioner starts in Port Loko in the field of public health after his studies abroad and lauded the organization Partners In Health (PIH) for their invaluable support to the Port Loko Government hospital.

He noted PIH supports for the past 15 months, describing their partnership as a treasure to the hospital.

Dr. Kargbo told his audience that the role of his Ministry and the government is to provide affordable and accessible quality health care to the population of Sierra Leone which at a point, was disrupted as a result of the Ebola outbreak.

Commenting on the Post Ebola Recovery Plan he noted the six to nine months plan to restore the basic services in March 2016, adding that the 10 to 24 months for a resilient Zero and the reduction of maternal, newborn and child mortality starts effective April 2016. Port Loko, under the National Emergency Medical Service (NEMS), he disclosed will benefit from 14 Ambulances and recruitment of the sons and daughters of the soil. The Ebola he told his audience is still with us, and admonished the entire residents of Port Loko to continue to observe the necessary precautionary measures as government strives to attain economic recovery.

On the recovery phase, Dr. Kargbo said government will continue to engage communities to take a look at the restoration of basic services, health workers and patients’ safety, community based surveillance and information, and the need to report adequately.

He underscored the importance of inter- sectoral collaboration, adding that the provision of the diagnostic equipment would go a long way in addressing some major health challenges and thanked PIH for the resourceful partnership with the hospital management.

The Medical Superintendent Port Loko Government hospital, Dr. Peter Matthew George said the hospital between October-November 2015 faced a lot of challenges, noting that collaborative efforts between the hospital and Partners In Health, greatly enhanced quality health care delivery service in the hospital.

He said apart from the diagnostic equipment, PIH was able to rehabilitate all the wards, established a permanent triage and equipped the Laboratory and the theatre in the hospital.

Dr. George expressed the Ministry’s appreciation and solidarity to the PIH partnership, hoping that the relationship will continue to grow from strength to strength.

Partners in Health (PIH) Operation Officer, Ion Lanscher reiterated his organization’s commitment to provide more assistance and help build a strong human resource capacity at the Diagnostic Unit of the hospital.

Assistant Inspector General of Police North West, Fodie Daboh described the gesture as a great achievement for the people of Port Loko district and implored all to serve as watch dogs for the protection and effective use of the equipment.

Other speakers include the District Medical Officer, Dr. Tom Sesay, the District Council Chairman, Mr. Hamid Fofanah and PIH Clinical Manager, Cindy Albertson.

Main highlights include a conducted tour of various facilities and the cutting of the tape and dedication of Diagnostic Unit of the hospital.
