Paramount Chiefs present position paper Constitutional Review Committee
The National Council of Paramount Chiefs (NCPC) have presented their position to the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) of Sierra Leone today Monday 16th November, 2015 at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown.
In his statement to the Committee, prior to the delivery of the paper, the Chairman of the NCPC, Paramount Chief Charles Caulker informed the CRC that they have converged at the Secretariat that day to stamp their position on the ongoing review process. Among their aspirations are the following:
No term limit of Paramount Chieftaincy – The tenure of Paramount Chiefs must continue to be for life.
They want to be removed from Parliament so that they can form their own house which is to be called the National House of Chiefs.
They want the election of Paramount Chiefs to continue as it is-that is by electoral college and not by universal adult suffrage as some people are suggesting.
The removal from office of PCs for “gross misconduct” as contained in the extant constitution must be amended. Gross Misconduct must be defined in the revised Constitution.
Any chief wishing to go into politics must resign their chieftaincy position.
These and many other issues were presented to the CRC for constitutional amendment.
