President Bio Assures Paramount Chiefs
The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio has assured that he would empower Paramount Chiefs to enhance easy administration.
The Head of State made the strong statement yesterday during a meeting with Paramount Chiefs at Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown.
He described chieftaincy as a great and honorable institution and recognized the great role Paramount chiefs played to elevate him to where is today.
“If we talk about development, policy implementation, peace and unity, we must take our Paramount Chiefs very seriously”, said the President and emphasized on the important role Paramount chiefs are playing in the administration of the state.
He told listeners that they have started working with Paramount Chiefs since the days of the National Provincial Ruling Council (NPRC) to ensure inclusive governance and admonished Paramount Chiefs to not allow politics diverge them from their responsibilities to enhance stable government.
“No Government can succeed without working with you”, he informed Paramount Chiefs and applauded that it was a great opportunity to meet with Paramount Chiefs.
He thanked all chiefs for his victory and promised them that better days ahead. He maintained that as a government they would ensure that Paramount Chiefs acquired the requisite skills to be part of the decentralization process.
President Bio recalled that during difficult times in 1996 when he asked the nation to make a choice between peace and election, he was greatly supported by the northern chiefs because they were understood his motive.
He argued that he called Bintumani two not to continue stay in power as perceived by the public but to foster peace and unity for the general growth of the country and echoed that he would give his required support to the chiefs because they are useful in national governance.
He encouraged the gathering that nobody should feel marginalized because he said; everybody is part of the government and raised that he would make sure the voices of Paramount chiefs are heard on regular basis.
“We need security, peace and cohesion”, said the President and encouraged chiefs to be proactive in taking firm decision and concluded by stressing that let us make sure the country better and safe for us all.
The Head of Paramount Chief Council, Fasuluku Sonsiama (iii) said the 2017 decentralization act increased chiefdoms from 149 to 190 adding that the role of Paramount Chiefs is not define in any statue. He argued that there is no law in the constitution which prevents Paramount chiefs from taking part in national politics.
He said the meeting was organized by the National Counsel of Paramount Chiefs to congratulate the newly elected President and also to pledge their support, loyalty and commitment to work with President Bio for the maintenance of peace, unity and development.
He bragged that the Paramount Chief institution has no human resource problem because according to him the have doctor, engineers and lawyers who are Paramount chiefs and concluded that working with the President is in the best interest of Paramount chiefs.
PC Bai Sheborah Kasangha said they are with the President to achieve his aims and objectives and recalled that in 1993 when he was crowned Paramount Chief, he was recognized by President Bio while PC. Bai Koblo Queen said the counsel of Paramount chiefs has done a lot to unify the country.
