Bumbuna to be shut down?
Allegedly a serious development in the energy sector will hamper the supply of electricity to Freetown in coming days. Â Bumbuna Hydro dam which has been supplying light in Freetown since the tail end of last year will be shut down again for upgrade. The source did not dilate on the upgrading that is to be done to the dam, but it might not be unconnected with an earlier warning given by an expert in the energy sector that the dam will only work temporarily if it is switched on at the time it was done. The expert had warned that the dam was not ready for full operation and will be damaged if switched on without rectifying the faults, but government went ignored the warning and went ahead with the operation of the dam.
However, when the Director of the Bumbuna Hydro Project Dr. Abdul Jalloh was contacted, he said as at the time of speaking they had no plans like that. “It is a piece of machinery and as I have always said machines can be shut down for routine maintenance. But as we speak now, there are no plans to shut down the dam,†Dr. Jalloh said. Maybe a diplomatic way of lending credence to the information.
In another related development, this press has been reliably informed that there are fuel constraints as government or its donors did not put mechanisms in place for fuel for the said machines. It’s not known how government will handle this dicey situation as electricity is badly needed by Freetown’s residents.
