SLAA, One Management to host Sierra Leone marathon

Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) in collaboration with One Management a UK based firm will be organizing the first edition ‘Run 4 A Reason’ marathon slated for 27th September 2015.

At a press conference at the SLAA office Technical Director Harold Palmer said they decided to name the marathon “Run for a Reason Marathon” because it is the most important event at this time they want to use to tell the world that Ebola is coming to an end in Sierra Leone.

He said they came into agreement to organize the marathon for the world to know that Sierra Leoneans are very healthy despite been faced with a big setback internationally.

Palmer disclosed that they will involve the provincial athletes so that the marathon will have a national flavor adding it an open one. But only athletes within the ages of 18 and above are eligible to compete and the registration forms are free.

The association is expecting over 2000 athletes, including active and non-active athletes to compete in the event.

He also stated that each athlete will have a medical form that they will complete to make sure that they are fit to take part in the marathon and they are going to use their normal club uniforms, and the organizer of one management will provide bibs and the numbers.

The technical director said they are going to use the standard root that is line with the IAAF that is why the marathon will start at Lumley beach (Family Kingdom) round about, going through Wilkinson Road, Congo Cross, Brookfields, Savage Street, Campbell Street, Pademba Road, Cotton Tree, Siaka Stevens Street, PZ, Regent Road, Goderich Street, Eastern Police, kissy Road, Cline Town, Fourahbay Road, Eastern Police, Abacha Street, P-Z, Wilberforce Street, Siaka Stevens Street, Sander Street, Savage Street, Syke Street, and the Siaka Steven

He also revealed that four hours after the start of the race the route will be open to the public and any athletes who is left behind during that period will be collected and place in a first Aid van.

The Production Manager and Marketing executive of One Management, Randa Sheriff said the organization is based in London and America and they have brought it to Sierra Leone, working with athletes and artists.

She said their expectation for the marathon is to see how successful the outcome of the event will be, that was why they are offering encouraging price money for the first three (3) positions in both the male and female categories.

She asserted that they want to improve the standard of the athletes in their clubs. So they are creating ways for them to be able to use the social media properly. They will be creating Twitter accounts, Facebook pages and logos for clubs and athletes, without these facilities and they will also train them on how to make use of them.

According to Randa Sheriff, the prices will be tag as follows; first price male and female Le1, 500, 000, second place winners will receive Le600,000 and the third place athletes will take home Le400,000.
