Africell Supports Salone Marathon In Makeni
Africell is among other renowned organizations supporting the 2014 Sierra Leone Marathon to be held in Makeni on 25th May 2014 while on Thursday 15th May 2014, the Street Child Sierra Leone Marathon was be launched at the Africell headquarters, Wilberforce, Freetown.
Africell’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Joe Abass Bangura revealed that the company supports the objective of the event which is to raise funds to help some of the most vulnerable children in the country, rescue them from the streets and placing them into homes and schools where they rightly belong.
Joe Abass Bangura said that Africell is well-known for its support to grassroots and needy Sierra Leoneans and is elated at the chance to once again make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children whom the company believes have potentials irrespective of their backgrounds asserting that all they need is an opportunity to discover and exploit their potentials.
He also highlighted that the company would pay for the cost of the public address facilities, stage, billboards, printing of publicity materials, campaign in the print and electronic media, free close user group facilities, transportation, other logistics and cash all amounting to $25,000.
Joe Abass Bangura further reiterated that Africell is the dominant supporter of most of the sporting disciplines in the country including football, volleyball, squash, lawn tennis, table tennis, basketball and marathons.
He went on to state that, “jogging is high on the list of activities essential for healthy living with the prospect of also being able to raise funds to help these vulnerable children” and commended Street Child Sierra Leone for spearheading the event and other sponsors for their generous support adding, “Africell Na Wi Network, Salone Na Wi Contri’.”
Street Child Sierra Leone Marathon’s Director, Greg Harris, who announced details of the event, informed that last year’s marathon brought together 200 international competitors alongside an estimated 600 Sierra Leoneans and that collectively in the past two years, the runners have raised more than $500,000 for the welfare of street children throughout the country.
He continued that this year, they hope to raise more funds by allowing competitors to experience Sierra Leonean hospitality and help to offer vulnerable children across the country the opportunity to seek a more positive way of life.
Greg Harris further disclosed that the event combines the challenges of a marathon, half-marathon, 10 km or 5 km race and that the event is open to runners of all abilities and costs as little as Le 40,000, Le 30,000 and Le 25, 000 to enter while Sierra Leonean runners would compete for a share of Le 9,000,000.
Gambia Bird Airlines representative, Mehsen Lakiss said such projects are not possible without dedicated partners with the common goal of making the event a success, a goal shared by Gambia Bird and is extremely proud to be counted among partners as an official airline.
The Sierra WiFi representative stated that as the country’s premier WiFi provider, it believes in excellence and is proud to support everything they do which includes supporting a premier sporting event to raise funds for and awareness about an outstanding organization from which 20,000 children have benefited over the past five years.
