NERC in Le146m Debt – Contractor Threatens Court Action

A contractor in Mattru Jong, Bonthe District, John Gbonda, has vowed to drag to court the Bonthe District office of the National Ebola Response Center (NERC) for failing to pay him the sum of 146 million Leones for rehabilitating the District Ebola Response Center (DERC) office in Mattru Jong and for constructing a generator house for the office.

During an exclusive interview with this press, Gbonda explained that he was initially hired by the consortium, through the World Vision Sierra Leone but that half way through the work, a controversy erupted over the method of rehabilitation, causing the World Vision to withdraw from the contract. He continued that the DERC office then instructed him to carry on the work which he completed since December last year.

He noted that the DERC office has been giving him a series of vain promises to pay him, a situation which, he said, has caused him severe financial embarrassment.

Contacted, the then DERC Coordinator, Harold Kamara, confirmed that the office owes the contractor 146 million Leones but blamed the unfortunate situation on the consortium and World Vision that initially hired him. He stated that all his efforts to ensure that the contractor was paid proved futile.
