LEWAF Combats Domestic Violence but in dire need of more funding

The Lady Ellen Women’s Aid Foundation (LEWAF) was founded in 2008 but formally established in January, 2014, with the mission to tackle violence against women using four thematic areas, prevention, protection, response and advocacy.

According to the Founder and Executive Director, Mohamed Jalloh (in photo), the organization has recruited 315 survivors of domestic violence and created opportunities for them to access loans and engage in business with the aim of economically empowering them to make the self-reliant and less vulnerable to domestic violence.

The Executive Director further informed this medium that his organization also counsels victims of domestic violence and assists them to seek legal redress after helping them with medication, adding that LEWAF has established a social support network of women who report to the organization cases of domestic violence.

Despite the organization’s visible successes, he went on, it is faced with many challenges prominent among which is a sustainable means of funding to continue providing client support services such as provision of legal representation, medical facilities and transportation among others.

Jalloh furthered that the organization has been working in partnership with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs and the Rainbow Initiative which provides free medical examination and treatment for teenage sexual assault victims.
