Sierra Leone gets its first Three-Star General
Sierra Leone’s Chief of Defense Staff, Samuel Omar Williams, has made history as being the first soldier in the country to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
LTG Williams was decorated by President Ernest Korma as the country’s first three-star general during a grand occasion at the Mayaung Officer’s Mess at Wilberforce in Freetown on Friday, July 3rd, 2015.
Two other senior officers, the Commander Joint Force, Mamadie Mohamed Keita and the Chief of Staff, Michael Mohamed Samura were also promoted to the ranks of Major General and Brigadier General respectively.
While decorating the officers, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is the Commander-in-Chief of RSLAF, noted that Sierra Leone has made another history and that his government has succeeded in putting Sierra Leone’s military at par with the armies of other countries in the West Africa sub region.
Koroma disclosed his government’s plans to review the salaries and other conditions of service of the military, adding that after Ebola, the RSLAF will resume its peacekeeping operations.
While giving the welcome address earlier, the Assistant Chief of Defense Staff Operations and Plans, Brigadier General Brima Sesay, described the occasion as unique as it was the first time in the history of RSLAF they are having a CDS officer in the rank of lieutenant general.
