Prayer against Ebola taken into Islam’s sacred house

Sierra Leaone’s envoy to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Alhaji M.S Kargbo on Saturday, 8th November, 2014 took part in the ceremonial washing of Islam’s most sacred house, the “Ka’aba” where he used the opportunity to pray for the eradication of the Ebola Virus Disease.  (Photo:  Sheikh Sudias in dark glasses, after washing the Kaaba)

The sacred exercise was led by the Governor of Makkah region, Prince Mishal Bin Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud. The Prince circumambulated the black stone after washing it on behalf of his father, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.

The ceremony was attended by a number of Princes, Ministers, top Islamic Scholars, some members of the Islamic diplomatic corps accredited to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the head of the Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais.

According to Sheikh Sudais, the ceremonial washing of the Ka’aba is done following the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who washed it after entering it at the time of the conquest of Makkah. The sacred event takes place twice a year – before the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan and at the end of the Muslim pilgrimage (Hajj).

After the event, Ambassador Kargbo said he deemed it a great honour to participate in the washing of the Ka’aba. “This is the second time I am fortunate enough to get this honour and I used the opportunity to pray for the nation and the speedy eradication of Ebola in our beloved Sierra Leone,” the envoy told reporters after the exercise.

Kargbo furthered that it was a wonderful opportunity to take part in the ceremony. He thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his government for the opportunity. The Ka’aba is a cuboid building in the holy city of Makkah and the direction where Muslims face while performing prayers. It is located at the center of Islam’s most sacred mosque, Al-Masjid al-Haram – the largest mosque in the world.
