When Ebola rears its ugly head again!

News about the reemergence of the Ebola virus in neighboring Guinea that ravaged the sub-region claiming approximately 11, 000 people between 2014 and 2016 in the West African subregion has been received with a heavy heart. The Guinean Government has already officially declared an outbreak following positive results of tests conducted, a few of which resulting in deaths.

It was in Guinea again back in 2014 that the first case was detected and eventually the virus entered Sierra Leone from the eastern flank of the country. In two years, the virus brought the economy to its lowest ebb with all aspects of the society coming to a standstill. The toll of Ebola is indeed unquantifiable to say the least. Even after WHO declared the country Ebola free, the consequences of the virus remain a thorn in the flesh as survivors continue to suffer the aftereffects of the disease and battle with Government to address their health condition accordingly.

But even before the memories of agony inflicted on the population by Ebola fade away, there is yet news of another wave of the deadly virus rearing its ugly head again.

The situation becomes more worrying than ever before in the context of a ravaging COVID-19 pandemic. We view the situation with serious concern and call on the authorities to not leave a stone unturned in putting measures in place to ensure that the effects are minimized at the lowest.

We are aware of the huge constraints this may bring to bear on an already dire economic and social situation. Our only glimmer of hope is that we can learn from experience and build on the already existing infrastructure and capacity, which we strongly believe will be of immense good in dealing with this rather complicated environment.

We also urge international partners to step up their intervention in prompt response to this emergency and avoid the looming human catastrophe!
It is important that all pillars dealing with public health emergency are fully activated, especially the communication pillar, which raises public awareness and demystify the unbelief that engulfed the initial outbreak which led to an escalation of the situation.
