As the war on Ebola intensifies DCI-SL targets over 10,000 people with Ebola messages
The Executive Director of Defence for Children International Sierra Leone Abdul Manaff Kemokia (Mr.) has on Friday 29th August said Defence for Children International Sierra Leone is hoping to reach out to over 10,000 people with messages on Ebola prevention and response.’
“Over 10,000 people in thirty six communities in our seven administrative districts will be targeted with key messages on how to respond and prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease in Sierra Leone,” Mr. Kemokia said adding that “we will also register children affected or orphaned by the Ebola Virus Disease.’
On the specific communities that will benefit from DCI-Sierra Leone’s intervention, Mr. Kemokia confirmed that Western Area Rural and Urban will provide-12 communities; Bo district-4 communities; Kenema district-5 communities; Bombali district-4 communities; Kono-3 communities; Moyamba district-8 communities.
Mr. Kemokia however continued that the Ebola Virus Disease which affected over 200 children in the country is a “life threatened disease” that needed effective coordination between all stakeholders if Sierra Leone should succeed in fighting against the sickness.
“Over 200 of them are recorded to have been affected by the Ebola Virus Disease in Sierra Leone. Therefore, we should not seat back and allow it to increase as children are much more vulnerable to the disease,” Mr. Kemokia said.
The Child Activist also said that Defence for Children International Sierra Leone with aid from DCI/ECPAT Netherlands would support Child Welfare Committee members, Defence for Girls Groups and Children and Youth Advocacy Board with the needed resources that will see them involved in the awareness raising campaign on how to respond and prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country.
He said “we will support Child Welfare Committee members, Defence for Girls Groups and Children and Youth Advocacy Board with megaphones, posters, clorines, gloves, sanitizers, dettol, soap and fact sheets on preventing and responding to Ebola so they will be involved in the awareness raising campaign” adding that “we will also supply chlorine and posters to 15 institutions frequently visited by children, including police stations particularly the Family Support Units, courts and Children’s detention centres to assist them prevent Ebola.”
He ended by thanking DCI/ECPAT Netherlands for carry out the much needed project and called on the government and other development partners to do more to end the Ebola scourge in the sub-region ‘as soon as possible.
