Why Drug Abuse?

This press is fully aware of the unpleasant and notorious fact that many of our youths have resorted to drug abuse as a way of reducing their stress in the midst of mass unemployment, gross social injustice, rampant corruption, starvation, chronic poverty and other political, social and economic diseases plaguing this republic.

We wholeheartedly support the psychiatrist, Dr. Nahim’s view that poverty and its attendant socio-economic miseries have been mainly responsible for the high rate of drug abuse, especially among ages ranging from 16 to 38 years which form the bulk of the productive working population.

There is the saying that when survival is at stake, morality takes a back seat and it is crystal clear that the very survival of our youths is seriously at stake, so, they no longer care about morality. We believe most of our youths who are involved in drug abuse would have died of economic stress long ago had they not been taking drugs to reduce their stress as stress kills faster than any narcotic drug.

We are recommending that one of the most effective ways to combat drug abuse is to make the lives of our youths meaningful by creating job opportunities to make them gainfully employed. When employed, they are bound to abandon the drugs since an idle brain is the devil’s workshop.
