Journalists trained on Ebola in Kenema

A total of 50 journalists on Thursday 12 June, 2014 received training on reporting on the Ebola Viruses

The District Medical Officer (DMO) in Kenema Dr. Mohamed Vandi said in Kenema that the government of Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma is well committed to the fight of Ebola in Sierra Leone.

Dr. Vandi made this statement during a one day training session for journalists on reporting Ebola related stories at the district council hall in Kenema.

He said a lot of misconceptions are going on with regard to the Ebola virus, its transmission, prevention, and other political myths surrounding the fight against Ebola.

Dr. Vandi said even though the central has not disbursed funds for the training of media practioners, but as a district fighting Ebola the transmission of accurate information on the Ebola virus must be a concern to the health ministry.

The DMO described the Ebola virus as a contagious and deadly disease that has survival chances of 50% if the patients come earlier to health facility and they are tested in time.

The DMO said even though the virus is deadly it can be as well prevented.

He made PowerPoint presentation on the causes of Ebola, prevention, care and supportive treatment for patient’s burial and personal protective gears for nurses.

He thanked GOAL–SL for supporting the training of journalists in the dissemination of correct information on Ebola.
