Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation in massive corruption
The large purchase of buses towards the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in 2012 by the Government of Sierra Leone has left the Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation (SLRTC) in the cold as a result of mass corruption that hit the institution ranging from procurement, fuel chits, and spare part modules under the Management of Mr. Bockarie Lewis Kamara.
According to the ACC review report launched on the 4th of June this year, the report states that the management headed by Mr. Bockarie Lewis Kamara has been flouting the procurement procedures in the purchase of the busses in question. But the General Manager is claiming to be Mr. Clean of which the ACC report concluded by pointing that SLRTC is deeply engulfed in mass corruption.
Since the assumption of office of Mr. Bockarie Lewis Kamara, SLRTC Management is now on the brink of collapse as a result of his mal-administration which has left the institution dead.
The purchase of fuel, spare parts and other amenities needed for the operation of the buses in the country goes directly to his allies as a result of sidelining genuine suppliers to the cooperation which he refered to as money choppers and not implementers who are now parading the corridors of power to gain access in the procurement exercise in the cooperation are now at his back to see him take the exit door.
Bockarie Lewis Kamara, was a former bus conductor in England who was fished out by President Koroma to head the management of the institution which is currently lacking essential services needed by the public.
His style of administration in the cooperation seemed to be far from his predecessors, the maintenance unit officials in the cooperation are bitterly complaining of lapses of which the General Manager is doing the purchase by himself only without consulting them until after the purchase is done, the maintenance officials will detect that spare parts bought by the General Manager most times are fake spare parts and cannot be worked with which normally causes deficit for the corporation.
On that note, Bockarie Lewis Kamara held a press conference at his PWD Office Kissy in Freetown and told the press that it is the work of his detractors that wanted him to take the exit door of the cooperation which he describes to be a witch hunt on his person.
Mr. Kamara also stated that 24 buses have been re-carbonised for onward operations come second week in June this year; when asked about the remaining buses that are to be re-carbonised, Mr. Kamara said that the work is ongoing.
